Summary

Human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs) are complex carbohydrates that represent the third most abundant component of human milk after lactose and lipids. More than 150 different and structurally distinct HMOs have been identified so far and accumulating evidence indicates that different HMOs have different functions. In this presentation Lars Bode reviews the biological significance of HMOs, the relevance of its variation among women and the impact of specific HMOs in infant health and development.
