Quality of life in infants with functional gastrointestinal disorders: a large prospective observational study

Speakers: C. Jung

Presented at NNI European Meeting: Early Nutrition Influence

Summary

In this presentation, Camille Jung describes the findings of a large observational study of infants across France that were suffering from functional gastrointestinal disorders.  Very frequent in infancy, the conditions such as constipation, diarrhea, regurgitation and colic are frequently studied, but this research, published in 2017, was the largest looking at their effects on the quality of life for families.  Approaches, medical management and outcomes were all recorded, looking at communication behaviours, the ability to remain alone, the family environment and phycological/somatic well-being.  Changes in infant formula were often recommended, but there was a surprisingly high rate of medication prescription by pediatricians, even including medicines not recommended for infants.
